Tip #1: Pain in the Back

Back pain is one of the most common reasons for medical visits. In many cases, back pain is “non-specific”, meaning that the pain results from a muscle strain of some kind. This kind of pain usually resolves itself and the discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. In some cases, however, back pain can be a real cause for concern. Here are some back pain red flags:
- Pain that has not improved after 4 weeks.
- Pain that goes down the leg especially when there is weakness.
- Pain that does not get better even when lying down.
- Pain that is accompanied by loss of bowel or bladder control.
- Pain associated with fever, weight loss, or a history of cancer.
- Pain that results from a fall or some other type of trauma.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms.
Tip #2: Energy Drinks – Healthy or Not?

For most people, having the occasional energy drink is not a problem, but there are some things you should be aware of. Most energy drinks contain large amounts of caffeine and sugar. Too much caffeine can lead to nervousness, insomnia, irritability, rapid heart beat and even increased blood pressure. The sugar found in energy drinks can also lead to weight gain unless consumed in moderation.
Mixing energy drinks with alcohol can also be an issue. The caffeine can reduce the feeling of intoxication, making many people drink more than they normally would. Energy drinks are fine to replace the occasional cup of coffee, but if you are tired all the time, talk to your doctor, as this could be the sign of a more serious medical condition.
Tip #3: Blood Pressure Checks Make You Nervous?

It’s often called “White Coat Hypertension,” meaning that when a medical professional approaches you with a blood pressure cuff, your blood pressure starts to rise and read higher than when you check it in a non-clinical setting. It’s pretty common, but how do you manage this? When this phenomenon occurs, many clinicians suspect that White Coat Hypertension is at play. When no other signs, symptoms or history of hypertension exist, he or she may suggest you take automated blood pressure measurements at home, after validating the accuracy of your own machine at your PCP’s office. Many doctors advise using some self-relaxation tips before blood pressure checks if White Coat Hypertension is an issue for you.
